- Základním předpokladem pro studium v kurzu je zájem o štípanou industrii evropského pravěku a snaha problematice porozumět. Štípaná industrie je specifická skupina hmotné kultury, jejíž analýza vyžaduje, aby si student osvojil nejen základní znalecké a typologické zkušenosti, ale chápal principy technik a metod její výroby a celou šíři jejího operačního řetězce.

- Course objectives
- Main goal of the course is to present basic characteristics of chipped stone industry, methods of its documentation and methods of its analysis for further exploitation of archaeological data.
The course includes an overview of applied raw materials, techniques and production methods, typology and functional attributes. Approaches of expert analysis, dynamic analysis, operational sequences, use-wear analysis and experiment are presented. - Learning outcomes
- After completion of this course, student will be able to:
- analyse any collection of chipped stone industry regarding the techniques and methods of production, morphotypology, and functional analysis;
- determine the applied raw material and chronological and cultural frame of Central European collections;
- document a collection both in database and drawing;
- consider the choice of best methodological tools to explore archaeological data from arbitrary collection - Syllabus
- introduction to study of chipped lithics (principles, history of research, modern methodology);
- chipped stone industry raw materials (introduction, classification, raw materials of Central Europe, studied characteristics);
- techniques and methods of production of chipped lithics;
- basic description of debitage and cores;
- dynamic analysis principles, classification by exploitation stage;
- basic description of tools (studied characteristics);
- morphotypological and functional classification of tools;
- basic database description of collection and statistic analysis;
- introduction to complex dynamic analysis and chaines opératoires;
- introduction to spatial analyses of chipped stone industry;

- Teaching methods
- The course is held as a combination of lectures and practical workshop targeted at direct practical and haptic demonstration of artefacts and methods of their analysis. Obligatory workshop of documentary drawing is included. The course has a full e-learning version, which serves as study support.
- Assessment methods
- The course comprises 12 lessons. Every lesson contains texts, rich visual presentation, further reading, practicing modules and feedback test.
Evaluation is realised in each lesson as an oral test of expert knowledge based on presented subject. These tests serve as immediate feedback of understanding the analysis principles.
For practicing modules, at least 50 % are required (unlimited number of trials). For feedback tests (5 questions for assurance of understanding), 80 % are required. Mostly practical skills will be tested.
The course is terminated by a collective colloquium focused on the acquired expert skills. - Language of instruction
