- Course objectives
- The course will provide a basic overview of the development of administrative institutions of the Catholic Church in Bohemia and Moravia from Great Moravian times to the present. It offers a brief characterization of the administration of the Utraquist and neo-Utraquist churches, the Unity of the Brethren, the tolerance churches of the Augsburg and Helvetic confessions, the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, the Silesian Church of the Augsburg Confession, the Church of the Czechoslovak Hussites and the Orthodox Church in the Czech lands and Slovakia. Attention is also paid to documents from church authorities and church archives.
- Learning outcomes
- GRADUATES OF THE COURSE will have acquired a basic overview of issues surrounding church administration which they will be able to apply to work in archives or research into church diplomatics and church history.
- Syllabus
- 1) beginnings of church administration in the Czech lands from the 9th to early 13th century;
- 2) changes in church administration in the 13th and first half of the 14th century;
- 3) church administration from Arnošt of Pardubice’s reforms to the outbreak of the Hussite Revolution (1343–1419);
- 4) Catholic church administration from Hussitism to White Mountain (1419–1620);
- 5) reforms of Catholic church administration after White Mountain;
- 6) changes in Catholic church administration at the time of the Enlightenment reforms;
- 7) Catholic church administration in the long 19th century;
- 8) Catholic church administration in interwar Czechoslovakia and in the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia;
- 9) Catholic church administration in postwar and communist Czechoslovakia (1945–1992);
- 10) administration of the Utraquist and neo-Utraquist church and the Unity of the Brethren;
- 11) administration of tolerance churches of the Augsburg and Helvetic confessions, the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren and the Silesian Church of the Augsburg Confession;
- 12) administration of the Church of the Czechoslovak Hussites and some smaller non-Catholic churches;
- 13) administration of the Greek Catholic Church and Orthodox Church in the Czech lands and Slovakia;
- OPTIONAL PART OF THE COURSE: a one-day excursion to the Diocesan Archives of the Bishopric of Brno in Rajhrad, or to another church archive or a state archive with a significant proportion of ecclesiastical material.

- Teaching methods
- The teaching is divided into an hour-long lecture and an hour-long seminar, in which extracts from written documents will be read and interpreted.
- Assessment methods
- As part of the course, undergraduates prepare a seminar paper on a selected topic on the history of church administration, which will be based on the study of – if possible unpublished – sources and will fulfil the requirements of a publishable academic text (it will contain a system of notes referencing sources and literature). The end-of-course exam will consist of a discussion of the seminar work and two supplementary questions on the history of older and modern church administration.
