- Course objectives
- The course deals with chrematonyms, i.e. with proper names of various products and other results of social activities - e.g. with Czech names of brands of beers, the novel Pride and Prejudice (Pýcha a předsudek), social institutions (Masarykova univerzita/Masaryk University) and events (Christmas/Vánoce) used in the Czech Republic.
- Learning outcomes
- Having participated in the course, students will be able:
- to describe main features of chrematonyms;
- to have good knowledge of their classification;
- to get orientated in scholarly sources;
- to describe a specific kind of chrematonyms. - Syllabus
- 1. Basic issues of onomastic theory and terminology (onomastics and its division, definition of proper names and their function).
- 2. Chrematonyms and their division (chrematonymical object, classification of chrematonyms, development of chrematonyms).
- 3. Individual types of chrematonyms (names of products, names of social institutions etc.).
