Prerequisites
Students are expected to pass the courses in phonetics and phonology, morphology and word-formation, syntax and lexicology before taking the course in stylistics. This requirement also applies to the introductory linguistic course - Úvod... and to courses in litarary theory. The lecture runs paralelly with a seminar in stylistics (CJA015).

Course objectives
The main aim of the lecture is to provide an overview of terminological system of present-day Czech stylistics, including its methodological aspects and development of the discipline.
Learning outcomes
Having participated in the course, students should be able:
to get orientated in terminology of modern Czech stylistics;
to specify links of stylistics to other scholarly disciplines;
to specify the individual branches of stylistics and their tasks;
to determine significant milestones of the development of stylistics in the Czech context;
to use relevant scholarly sources.

  • 1. Style and stylistics, stylistic factors, stylistic values, stylistic dissimilation. 2. Possible techniques of stylistic analysis. 3. Dichotomies of form and function. 4. Composition and style. 5. Varieties of Czech; usage, norm, codification. 6. Colloquial style. 7. Technical style. 8. Style of administration. 9. Journalistic style. 10. Style of advertising. 11. Oratory style. 12. Style in fiction. 13. Final revisions.
