Course objectives
The aim of the lecture is to make the first-year students acquainted with the ways of studying Czech literature, defining the field of study against other art disciplines. In the first part of the term, literary studies are characterised [including definition, categorisation (function, genres, oral/written mode) basic reference literature, literary history and literary criticism, literary theory, etc.] while in the second part the lectures will focus on versology in some detail (e.g. types of verse systems and forms, free verse, stress, expressiveness, metre, rhythm, trochee, iamb, dactyl, blankverse, alexandrine, logaeds, hexameter, pentameter, etc.) This should be done in such a way to make it possible for the student to use the acquired knowledge in practice.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course students:
- are familiar with issues concerning literary studies, literary science and its structure;
- understand particularities of literature as a kind of art, and its functional division;
- acquire theoretical principles of versology;
- are able to analyse texts from the versology point of view;
- are able to apply theoretical knowledge during complex interpretations of texts.
