Course objectives
The course aim is to acquaint the students with the concepts of European Slavic space and Comparative Literature, with chosen texts of the European space (for ex. according to topic) in comparative context in the usage of information about the texts of the European space from the position of literary history.
Learning outcomes
After the completion of the course, the student shall:
- apply the concepts of European Slavic space and Comparative Literature into practice, for example on a concrete artistic text;
- use the information about the texts of European space, as well as its concepts, when writing the final essay;
- interpret the chosen texts in the European space (for ex. according for topics) in comparative context;
- interpret one of the said theoretical concepts (in comparison or application).
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction. Concepts of Area Studies in relation to the Slavic context (as well as the concept of "Mitteleuropa" and R. Wellek). Historical discourse. Development of Comparative Literature and its contribution.
  • 2. Application of theoretical concepts to West Slavic literatures, namely the comparison of the basic evolutionary tendencies in Polish, Czech, and Slovak, literature and culture. Academic excursion: Karel Krejčí, Dionýz Ďurišin, Krystyna Kardyni-Pelikánová.
  • 3. Artistic and cultural excursion to Czech-Polish relationships: Bartoloměj Paprocký and Czech literature. Jak Kochanowski and Jan Amos Komenský (a concept of translation theory). Anna Stanislawská's intimate lyrical poetry.
  • 4. Application of theoretical concepts to East Slavic literatures, namely the comparison of the basic evolutionary tendencies in Russian and Ukranian literature and culture. Academic excursion in concepts: A. A. Čaadajev et al. The concept of History of Classical Russian Literature (before 1977).
  • 5. Artistic and cultural excursion: L. N. Tolstoy, his artistic micro-psychologism and philosophical tractates. Satires by Ilf and Petrov, and the concept of Jaroslav Hašek.
  • 6. Folklore inspirations of N. N. Gogol and T. Ševčenko.
  • 7. Artistic discourse of Belarus writer V. Bykav; consequently the concepts of the so-called three waves of representation of WW2 (namely Yuri Bondarev's The Choice, Vladimír Körner's Adelheid, or Květa Legátová's Želary).
  • 8. Application of theoretical concepts to South Slavic literatures and their comparison. Academic discourse: Ivan Dorovský. Veličko Todorov's concept of literary history.
  • 9. Artistic and cultural excursion to Bulgarian literature: namely Dora Gabeová and Vítězslav Nezval; Pejo Javorov as phenomenon of Bulgarian literature (example of catching up with developments in European literature: neoromanticism, symbolism, Czech anarchist rebels). Application of the model of so-called pulsating theory.
  • 10. Artistic and cutlural excursion to literatures of former Yugoslavia. Ivo Andrić (winner of a Nobel prize for literature) as a phenomenon of "modernity". Excursion to the concepts of readers' reception, and the so-called modernity of the literary work.
  • 11. Summary: additional examples of mutual influences in the context of Slavic area with a comparison on the time axis as addition.
