Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the work of a historian and especially with what are the sources and what are the sources for the study of Jewish antiquity. The content of the course will be reading sources not only in Czech but also in English. The student will learn to criticize, analyze, interpret them and use them for their work. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the text.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, the student will be able to think critically about the sources of the history of Jews and work with them as a historian.

  • 1. Introduction to the course and to Judaism I 2. Judaism II 3. Bible 4. Talmud 5. Flavius Josephus and Philo of Alexandria (including Hellenistic Greek historians such as Manetho) 6. Hellenistic Jewish sources (Septuagint, Letter of Ariste, Joseph and Asenat, Book of Jubilees, 1st Book of Enoch, 4 books of Maccabees) 7. Roman historians about Jews (Strabo, Tacitus, Flavius Josephus, Suetonius, Cassius Dio) 8. Roman poets and prose writers about Jews (Horatius, Iuvenalis, Martialis, Petronius) 9. Jews in the New Testament (Gospels, Acts of the Apostles, letters including letters of St. Paul) 10. Church Fathers I. (Letter of Barnabas, Ignatius of Antioch, Justin the Martyr, Tertullianus, Cyprianus…) 11. Church Fathers II. (Eusebios of Caesarea, John Chrysostom, Ambrose, Augustine, etc.) 12. Christian laws, Gnostics and heretics, popular views on Jews
