Course Enrolment Limitations
The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
The goal of this interactive seminar is to investigate the role of material, visual and ritual cultures into the christianization of the Mediterranean. Working on key-examples from the 3rd to the 6th century will be analyzed: 1) the spaces; 2) the ritual; 3) the decoration, and 4) the objects involved into the process of christianization. Students will thus involved into a trans-disciplinary reflection, with the possibility to further develop their skills in presentation, discussion and writing. Furthermore, performative actions will be part of this seminars/experiences. Participants will try to reconstruct - with their own bodies - the spaces of initiation as well as the ritual movements of the neophytes.
Learning outcomes
The student will be able to: - understand the relation between space, images and initiatory rituals
- discuss the performative dimension of visual culture
- know key monuments form the 3rd to the 6th c. on a Mediterranean level
