- Course objectives
- Ethnology in history informs a student of development interest in culture of man, theoretical conceptions and important persons at an ethnological research.
- Learning outcomes
- At the end of the course students should be able to: explain the development of fundamental basic theoretical directions of ethnology; interpret the results of the history of ethnology research in social and cultural connections; combine the methodological steps in ethnology and cultural anthropology; evaluate the development of ethnology in comparison with other disciplines.
- Syllabus
- 1. Inntroduction to the history of ethnology.
- 2. Beginning of interest in the “strange” and “different” in antiquity.
- 3. Islam and Europe, conflicts of various cultures.
- 4. Discovery of America and “end of certainty” in Europe.
- 5. Consequences of modern explorations (new knowledge as well as different views on own culture).
- 6. The Enlightenment, pre-Romantism in Europe.
- 7. Romantism as the background for defining “Folk” and its culture
- 8. Evolutionist theory in anthropology and ethnology.
- 9. Diffusionism.
- 10. Psychological and sociological schools.
- 11. Functionalism.
- 12. Structuralism.
