Course objectives
The aim of the subject is to provide students with basic research procedures focusing on applicability in the LIS field. The topics discussed are the basic chapters of the research methodology. Students should understand the importance of science and research with a focus on LIS, but also how information institutions support research in other fields.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- describe the meaning and basic principles of science and research;
- define the role of the library to support science and research;
- compare different research methods used in LIS;
- understand the results of the research published in the article or the research report.
Syllabus
  • 1. Specifics of research in various branches of science.
  • 2. "What can be researched", what are the limitations of interpretation of results, common types of errors.
  • 3. Sources of scientific knowledge.
  • 4. Types of research approaches and research methods.
  • 5. Claims for research tools - validity (credibility) and reliability (dependability) and their retention.
  • 6. Systems of science evaluation.
  • 7. Current paradigms in LIS.
  • 8. Design of information services.
  • 9. User surveys in LIS.
  • 10. Scientometrics, bibliometrics, altmetrics.
  • 11. Citation analysis.
