Course objectives
The course offers a survey of Latin literary production of Europe from late Antiquity (with special focus on Latin patristics) until the 11th century. It explains the prerequisites of literary development that emerged in the late Roman period. It describes specific features of medieval literature and pursues the genesis of the most popular genres of medieval Latin literature (especially hagiography, historiography, secular and religious poetry). Special emphasis is placed on the most important cultural centers in Europe and the phenomenon of the so-called renaissance periods (this part of the course deals in detail with the Carolingian and Ottonian renaissance).
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students will be able to explain the development of medieval Latin literature until the 11th century; to name and arrange in a chronological order the main authors of medieval Latin prose and poetry; to describe their work and its importance; to interpret the most important writings of the period.
