Course objectives
The aim of course is to offer students an overview of palliative care topics and ares which creates comprehensive picture of the subject. The aim of course is to acquaint students with the complexity of palliative proccess, with factors affecting quality of life of persons in palliative care, options of research, practical knowledgement about dying, with the most frequent diagnosis and specifity of the subject of palliative care. It also aims to offer students the possibility of critical evaluation of some topics through the discussion (ethics and euthanasia as a possibility).
Learning outcomes
Student will understand the context of dying process, student will have a knowledge about structure, aims, principle and division of palliative care. Students will have a knowledge about factors and their interconnection in the palliative process, where they play a major influence. Student will be able to criticaly evaluate some topics and think about their possible overlap. Student will have a knowledge about experiencing and needs of patients of palliative care. Also student will understand which way this factors affects a quality of life.
Syllabus
  • Definition, history, principle, divisions of palliative care, basic terms of thanatology, development of the understanding of death. Target group of palliative care, basic characteristics of the most frequent illness in palliative care, terminal stage, specifics of lethal illness in palliative process. Age group ang their specifics.
  • Death as a social taboo - dealing with death, how to talk a behave with seriously ill and dying patient.
  • Dying in historical process - dying earlier and nowadays, development of habits in dying process and their pros and cons (dying in home ambients, in hospital and hospice)
  • Practical part - what to do when i know lethal ill person, practical side of hospice care, crisis intervention for dying patients and survivors
  • Pallitive care as a multidisciplinary subject, intervention for survivors and family of lethal ill patient
  • Psychosocial needs of patients in palliative care - pain treatment, psychological needs, physical needs, dignity, social needs, spirituality, generativity
  • Palliative care fo children - specifics, understanding of death, family intervention
  • Terapeutic possibilities in palliative care - group therapy, artetherapy, canistherapy, some therapy directions..
  • Education possibilities in palliative care, role of personal and their influence in palliative process
  • Ethical viewpoint and theme of euthanasy - theoretical part, practial and legislative basics, discussion

Teaching methods
The lessons are carried out in the form of lectures once per week, case studies, class discussions, scientific literature reading and interaction of each other.
Assessment methods
Minimum mandatory attendence 80%, essay in the range of 2 - 3 pages, group work and active approach in lessons, participation in discussions.
