Course objectives
Byzantine and Modern Greek literary texts are read and interpreted in the seminar. The list of literature changes every year, depending on the topic of the course. In the autimn term 2019 the seminar is dedicated to the reception of Homer in Byzantium. The deadline for submission of essays: 31st December 2019.
Learning outcomes
In the course of the seminar, students learn the principles of literary work with text and at the end of the seminar they are capable of independent interpretation of an assigned literary work.

  • 20. 9.: Introduction, requirements, the phenomenon of reception, Homer and Byzantium.
  • 27. 9.: Early Byzantium (Gregory of Nazianzus, Athenais-Eudokia, Ilias Ambrosiana, Homer at schoool).
  • 4. 10.: Theodoros Prodromos: Sale of lifes.
  • 25. 10.: Eustathios of Thessalonica: commentarii Iliasis et Odysseae.
  • 1. 11.: Ioannes Tzetzes: Exegesis, Alegoriae, Carmina Iliaca.
  • 8. 11.: Hermoniakos, Metaphrasis Iliadis. War of Troy.
  • 15. 11.: Byzantine Ilias. Byzantine Achilleis.
  • 6. 12.: Reading and interpratation of texts according to the choice of students (texts for the essays).
  • 13. 12.: Reading and interpratation of texts according to the choice of students (texts for the essays).
  • 20. 12.: Students' presentations, evaluation.
