Course objectives
In contrast with spoken languages which operate on audio-oral modality, sing languages are realized visual-motorically. They are perceived through the vision and produced by hands, head and upper body. With respect to the visual modality of sign languages, students need to be trained in non-verbal communication, visual communication, and pantomime. The non-verbal communication includes the aspects are simultaneous to the use of the manual part of the language and typically bear the grammatical meanings (in contrast to the lexical meanings of the manual parts of the signs). The students are trained in focusing on the visual information and suppress the acoustic signals. Sign languages, which is produced by the hands, head and upper body, can be linked easily to pantomime.
Learning outcomes
Students are well trained in their body-mobility and they are sensitive to visual information.
