Course objectives
The course goal is practical knowledge of Vietnamese culture and Vietnamese in the Czech Republic during field trips and by presentations from invited specialists, Vietnamese guests and lecturers. Presentations are mostly focused on main cultural values of Vietnamese people, their habits, etiquette in personal contacts, festivals and relations Vietnamese to foreign nationals or to the Czech majority. The course Practical socio-cultural aspects of Vietnamese Studies is a profile core course of the study programme Vietnamese Studies.
Learning outcomes
Upon a successful completion of the course, a student will:
- have a particular personal experience from the Vietnamese environment and will be more profoundly acquainted with the corresponding questions
- have practical overview concerning most important values in Vietnamese culture, habits and main festivals
- be able to use acquired data about the etiquette in personal contacts and communication with Vietnamese
- be acquainted with current problems of Vietnamese studies or issues concerning the Vietnamese community in foreign countries and in Czech Republic.

  • lectures:
  • - Vietnamese culture and its main values, habits, etiquette in personal contacts, festivals
  • - lectures: history of Vietnamese migrations and history of Vietnamese minority in the Czech Republic
  • - talks of invited specialists and visiting scholars
  • - practical contacts with members of Vietnamese minority
  • - visits of Vietnamese restaurants or companies
  • - presentations from individual or collective fieldwork in Vietnam or in Vietnamese community abroad and in Czech Republic
