- Course objectives
- Definitions of sigillography, heraldry and genealogy; their basic concepts, terms, issues and fields; a history of the disciplines; sources in sigillography, heraldry and genealogy - their classification; the principles of heraldry including practical training; a typology of seals and practical training; types of seals and practical training; modern communal heraldry; types of genealogy records; the development of Roman Catholic matrices and Evangelical matrices, reading excerpts from Roman Catholic matrices.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, the student will be able to:
- understand the basic sphragistic terminology, recognise the basic types of seals according to their iconographical content and be aware of the functions of seals,
- to recognise the main and secondary sections of coats of arms, identify the basic sources of heraldry, know the main developmental trends in state, royal, aristocratic, ecclesiastical and communal heraldry;
- define the basic genealogical sequences, use genealogical information in practical research;
- acquire basic bibliographical date from sphragistics, heraldry and genealogy, and be aware of the main bibliographical and source publications and databases;
- place local heraldic and sphragistic sources within a wider European (global) context and comparison - Syllabus

- Introduction to the basic features of seals and coats of arms;
- Basic concepts in genealogical research;
- The most significant researchers in this discipline;
- The seminars focus on the practical use of a precise description of seals

- Seminar based on the active participation of students.
- Assessment methods
- The evaluation will be based on a short written work focusing on questions relating to sigillography, heraldry and genealogy. There will be an assessment in the form of a colloquium, which will include an analysis of the work and additional questions on the topic.
