Course objectives
Introduction to the Study of Lombardy from Late Antiquity to the arrival of Langobards and Carolingians: history and historiography, Arianism and orthodoxy, architecture, decoration and liturgy. The block course will be organized in situ from 15th to 18th November.
Learning outcomes
Student will be able to:
- Identify and summarize important features of the major moments of the history of Lombardy;
- undestand and critically analyze historiography and concepts related to this environment;
- produce an analytical study of selected artifacts;

  • ntroduction: Milan and Lombardy from Ambrose to Dario Fo - the historiography of a modern region without a past.
  • Late Antique Milan: goldsmithing and ivory (Museo del tesoro del Duomo, Museo Diocesano)
  • The Temple of St. Lawrence and the Fall of the Empire.
  • The Treasure of Monza and the arrival of the Langobards
  • Casteseprio and Torba, the story of a vanished kingdom
  • The Carlsonians in Milan and the temple of St. Ambrose.
