Course objectives
The course is the entry into the issue of research into vernacular architecture and rural seat. It introduces to the students the historical development of professional interest, the used terminology, typology and the basic genesis of the folk house in Central Europe.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to define basic terminology of traditional folk architecture and rural settlement. Students should be able to identify the stages of the evolution of settlement and house in history from rudimental forms (underground houses) to forms influenced by style architecture.

  • Aims and methods of research, heuristics.
  • Settlement and related issues.
  • Evolution of human dwellings from rudimental forms.
  • Building material, structures.
  • Development of house layout, interior, housing.
  • Farming, technical and sacral structures.
  • Typology of folk house in the Czech lands.
  • Folk architecture in contemporary world.
