- Course objectives
- The aim of this course is to present the problems of studying, interpreting and translating Medieval Latin literature based on a particular text. The course has a particular subject of the most famous medieval collection of secular poetry, the Carmina Burana (12th century). The content and formal variety of individual pieces of this collection offer a comprehensive idea about the prime phase of development of medieval secular poetry.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to appreciate the state-of-the-art of the research into the Carmina Burana collection. They will understand the linguistic features and they will be able to analyze the prosody and interpret the content of individual pieces of this literary corpus. As a result, students will acquire deeper understanding of the specific features of medieval Latin literature, such as the choice and meaning of the so-called auctoritates in the literary output of medieval authors.
