Course objectives
In this course, the students will gain knowledge about the literary and historical context of the Czech Reformation and learn about the most accentuated ecclesiastical, social and philosophical problems of this movement.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, a student will be able to:
- describe general literary and historical context of the Czech Reformation
- identify the main representatives of the early Czech Reformation and their ideas
- describe reactions to the reformatory thinking at the university and in the laic area
- understand the influence of the early Czech Reformation on the Hussite movement
- describe the relationship between the Czech reformation and the "reformations" in other lands of the medieval Europe

  • Legitimacy of the concept of so-called Hus´s predecessors
  • Situation at the Prague University (curriculum, John Wyclif's books, controversy and polemics)
  • Preaching as a traditional critique of contemporary ecclesiastical problems
  • Communication and public demonstrations
  • Iconoclasm
  • Burning books and heretics (Jan Hus, Jerome of Prague, medieval martyrdom)
  • Reformation in other medieval European lands
