- Course objectives
- In this course we explore Dutch literature in the following periods:
The Middle Ages
The Renaissance
The Enlightenment
The Romantic Era
By means of capita selecta we discuss a number of canonical texts in their social and cultural-historical context. The students are not only introduced to a number of important authors, titles and movements, they also learn how to analyze and contextualize texts. - Learning outcomes
- After finishing the course:
- students have a basic knowledge of the history of Dutch literature from the Middle Ages to Romanticism (they can distinguish broad tendencies)
- they can situate canonized works and authors that were being discussed
- they are able to identify, analyze and contextualize literary excerpts

- A combination of lectures and seminars
This course provides a comprehensive overview of Dutch literature until 1880 and in addition some "capita selecta" are discussed in more detail. Student-centered activities include presentations (two in total) and discussing texts based on reading + assignments. - Assessment methods
