- Course objectives
- The course introduces Social Pediatrics as an independent branch of study. For a major part of the semester, it focuses on the complex system of Czech child care. The aim of the course is to present problems of a complex child care in families and institutions. It presents the care for the development of healthy children and children threatened by a risky environment (threatened, socially maladapted, ill and handicapped children). Students should be able to learn about the system of child care and they can “indicate” a service from a care system on selected types of examples.
- Syllabus
- 1. Development and perspective of Social Pediatrics, basic information about the field, new terminology, Czech and international contexts. 2. A Child’s situation in a society, socialization process focused on medicinal issues. 3. Children’s needs, rights and duties. Czech and international basic legal norms (these topics are presented in a helpful way to the students’ practice). 4. Family, its importance, functions and malfunctions, child care. 5. A demographical view of families and contemporary trends. 6. Threatened, socially maladapted, ill and handicapped children. 7 Acutely and chronically ill children. 8. System of care for children living without a family. 9. Injuries and poisoning as the biggest problem in child age. 10. Children and families of other ethnicities, minorities, foreigners, migrants, homeless people. 11. Children in poverty and work abuse. Children in the streets vs. street children. 12. Criminality on children, criminality of children, criminality of children on children. 13. CAN syndrome, child prostitution, pornography, commercial sex abuse.
