- Course objectives
- The course offers an overview of the history of ethics from pre-history to the end of Middle Ages. The goal is to provide students with information about the basic questions, problems, works, branches and ethicists of the era.
- Learning outcomes
- Students will learn how to interpret key moral and philosophical attitudes in the era on the basis of selected source literature.
- Syllabus
- What is ethics, history of ethics? Methodology of history of ethics. The origins of morality, genealogy of morality, moral facts, values. Prehistoric, archaic societies and ancient cultures: Egyptian Book of the Dead, Ancient Codes, Homer, Hesiodos. Ancient ethics: Heraclitus, Democritus, Socrates, Plato, Sophists. Aristotle: Nicomachean Ethics Ethics of the Stoics and Skeptics. Ethics of the Epicureans and Kynics. Comparison of ancient and medieval ethics, Augustine: Confessions, On Lying, On Mercy and Free Will Peter Abaelard Thomas Aquinas
