- Course objectives
- The course provides essential theoretical information and introduces basic techniques from the field of child and adolescent psychotherapy. Instruction involves one lecture and one seminar each week. Whereas lectures are focused on general issues in child and adolescent psychotherapy, seminars focus on special techniques and topics related to the practice of child and adolescent psychotherapy.
- Learning outcomes
- After completing the course, students will be able to:
- Understand and explain theoretical foundations of the field of psychotherapy of children and adolescents;
- Use practical experience with selected techniques from the field of psychotherapy of children and adolescents;
- Distinguish between general issues and specific approaches in psychotherapy of children and adolescents. - Syllabus
- The content and structure of individual lectures may vary each semester depending on special situational and students’ needs. Here is an example of a typical course syllabus:
- Introduction (psychotherapy vs. evidence-based medicine; YAVIS syndrome; interpersonal vs. intrapersonal context; differences between the psychotherapy of children and adults)
- The purpose of psychotherapy
- Stages of the therapeutic process
- Catalysts (tools) of the psychotherapeutic process
- Play therapy
- Play techniques in selected therapeutic schools and approaches
- Storytelling techniques
- Family therapy
- Unique characteristics of different historical and current psychotherapeutic approaches and schools focusing on psychotherapy of children, adolescents and families
- Overview of theories of development in childhood and adolescence
- Intellectual disabilities and children with psychotic symptoms
- ADD, ADHD, and related disorders
- Primarily somatic and psychosomatic disorders in children - possibilities and limits of psychotherapy
- CAN syndrome and PTSD
- Substance abuse and addictions among children and adolescents

- Teaching methods
- Instruction includes interactive lectures largely drawing on the experience of a practicing child psychotherapist. Complementary seminars involve discussions or field trips to institutions providing psychotherapeutic services for children and adolescents.
- Assessment methods
- Instruction consists of 90 minutes of lecture or seminar each week. Lectures and seminars alternate each week. The course is completed with an oral exam.
