Course objectives
The course aims at showing with practical exercises how to prepare a critical edition of a text and to analyse and solve concrete problems of textual criticism about texts written in the Middle ages in Romance languages. We will work with digital reproductions of medieval manuscripts and early prints.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to work independently on medieval and renaissance manuscripts written in Romance vernacular languages: reading, transcribing and preparing the edition of a single manuscript; fulfilling the recension and the emendatio; solving complex issues about the relationships between manuscript witnesses to a text; preparing a critical edition of a text by working on multiple witnesses.
Syllabus
  • The course includes commented readings of medieval texts written in different Romance languages. Since the course is quite technical, you are strongly reccomended to attend lectures.
