Course objectives
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with important specialists and interesting personalities of the field. It provides students with the latest developments in the field and leads them to understand trends in the field of Ukrainian studies.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to understand trends in the field of Ukrainian studies, to better apply their knowledge in the field, to focus on topical issues related to the field.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introductory lecture: Issues of periodization of modernism in Ukrainian literature.
  • 2. Awakening of the Titans: worldview orientations of Ukrainian classics and Ukrainian society at the turn of the XIX-XX centuries.
  • 3. The first modernist currents in Ukrainian literature (symbolism, impressionism, expressionism).
  • 4. “Red Renaissance” (“Executed Renaissance”): major political, social and cultural changes.
  • 5. Ukrainian poetry of the interwar period.
  • 6. Intellectual prose of Ukrainian modernism of the interwar period: Volodymyr Vynnychenko, Valerian Pidmohylnyi, V. Domontovych.
  • 7. Literature of Ukrainian emigration of the interwar period.
  • 8. Literature of Ukrainian emigration after the World War II (MUR, New York group, current wave).
  • 9. The Sixtiers, dissidents and the “displaced” generation of poets.
  • 10. Late modernism in Ukraine: between postmodernism and metamodernism.
