- Course objectives
- After completion of the course, student will be able to carry out expert assessment of archaeological findings from the Central European Stone Age (from Palaeolithic to the end of Eneolithic). It includes frame dating, cultural, technological and functional determination.
- Learning outcomes
- After completion of the course, student working as an archaeologist in excavations or in a museum will be able to identify material from the Stone Age, properly date and culturally determine the finds assemblages and material collections, and choose the proper excavation and conservation method with regard to their specifics, so that all archaeological data are preserved for subsequent evaluation.
- Syllabus
- 1. Seminar introduction: types of material culture, raw-materials in Stone Age, methods of expert analysis;
- 2. Introduction to expert analysis of chipped stone industry. Material culture of Lower and Middle Palaeolithic;
- 3. Material culture of Early Upper Palaeolithic (Szeletian, Bohunician, Aurignacian) and Upper Palaeolithic (Pavlovian/Gravettian and Magdalenian). Chipped stone industry, bone and antler industry, portable art, personal ornaments;
- 4. Material culture of Late Palaeolithic and Mesolithic. Chipped stone industry, bone and antler industry etc.;
- 5. Organic material culture exemplified by Neolithic finds;
- 6. Methods of expert analysis of ceramics;
- 7. Methods of expert analysis of macrolithic industry, bone and antler industry;
- 8. Morphological and technological features of Neolithic and Eneolithic chipped stone industry;
- 9. Material culture of Early and Middle Neolithic - Linear Pottery Culture, Stroked Pottery Culture, pottery, technical ceramics, lithic industry, bone and antler industry, art, personal ornaments;
- 10. Material culture of the Lengyel complex - Late Neolithic and Early Eneolithic. Pottery, technical ceramics, lithic industry, bone and antler industry, art, personal ornaments;
- 11. Morphological and technological features of ceramics of Early and Middle Eneolithic;
- 12. Morphological and technological features of Late Eneolithic material culture. Pottery, technical ceramics, lithic industry, bone and antler industry, copper artefacts;
