- Course objectives
- During the course students should acquire information on the development, typology and history of research on medieval sites (stone castles, timber-and-earth castles, fortified houses, etc.) in the region of Central Europe. The emphasis is put on the newest trends and methods used in European castellology so that the students are able to use them in their following scholarly activities or thesis preparation.
- Learning outcomes
- After completion of the course, student will have:
- Basic orientation in castle study
- Knowledge of residences of feudal lords in the 11th and 12th century
- Knowledge of basic terminology and typology of feudal residences
- Knowledge of development of medieval castles in Bohemia and Moravia
- Knowledge of development of medieval castles in the Kingdom of Hungary
- Knowledge of development of small feudal residences
- Basic orientation in modern documentation methods used in castle research - Syllabus
- The origins of castle study
- The origins of high medieval feudal residences
- Functions and categories of fortified residences, functional components
- Castles in Moravia and Bohemia
- Castles in Poland, Austria and Hungary
- Development of fortified houses, timber-and-earth castles and other feudal residences
