The course is offered to students of any study field.
Course objectives
This course proposes to investigate the different aspects of the cult of the Cross in Armenia and Iberia (Eastern Georgia) between the 4th and the 8th century, with a particular focus on its material and visual culture.
Learning outcomes
The course will be divided in three parts. First will be presented the role of the cross in national narratives related to the Christianization of Armenia and Iberia and thus the elaboration of a local sacred topography. The second part of the cross will focus on the liturgical aspects of the cult of the Cross by addressing both the influence of Jerusalem’s liturgy and the emergence of local specificities. Finally, the course will present the various material and visual expressions of the cult of the Cross in the region, with a focus on architecture and monumental art.
