Course objectives
The lecture is focused on the doctoral student being well acquainted with the essence of contemporary problems that must be faced by the South-Eastern European area. It defines the main conflict problems, determines their historical nature and attempts at their historical and recent solutions. While also noting the religious issues and the role of churches in   particular problems. It deals with historical and recent relations between the individual countries of South - Eastern Europe, the view of superpower politics on partial problematic periods and the consequences of superpower interventions in these relations in the past and present.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course the student will be able to: characterize the most important problems of Southeast Europe in the past and present; will know the historical nature of these problems; will be able to shed light on religious and ecclesiastical influences in the problems of south-eastern Europe; will be able, even in the media, to clarify the nature of the interventions of great powers in the problems of Southeast Europe and their consequences.

  • 1. Historical development of Southeast Europe and its influence on national liberation and national revival ideologies of Southeast European countries 2. State-building myths in today's southeastern Europe. 3. The influence of religion on relations between the peoples of southeastern Europe 4. Christianity and Islam in Southeast Europe in the past and present. 5. The legacy of the Eastern Question and its superpower interventions in today's southeastern Europe. 6. Superpower policy towards Southeast Europe in the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century. 7. The Bosnian question 8. The Kosovo issue 9. The Macedonian question 10. Serbian-Montenegrin relations 11. Serbian-Croatian relations 12. Bulgarian-Greek-Macedonian relations 13. European Union and Southeast Europe
