- Course objectives
- The doctoral student will acquire a more concrete idea of the content of area studies and of the world and European cultural areas (West Europe, Scandinavia, the Balkans, Central Europe, East Europe, the Mediterranean). He will have the idea of the multidisciplinarity of area studies and of the methods of the cognition of a cultural area together with the information about the synchrony and diachrony of individual areas.
- Learning outcomes
- The doctoral student will have the knowledge of the methodology of area studies and of the contemporary world, but mainly Euro-American cultural areas, of their history, economics, politics, language, culture, literature, political system and of the contemporary state.

- 1) The conceptions of area studies, European studies and Central Europe 2) Different understanding of area studies, philological-area studies 3) World cultural areas 4) European cultural areas in their diachrony and synchrony 5) The conceptions of Central Europe, Central Europe as a spiritual space, Eastern Europe and the Balkans, Western Europe and Scandinavia 6) The Slavonic cultural area 7) The relations of area studies and their disciplinary structure 8) The structure of a cultural area 9) The area as a language, literary, and artistic entity 10) The sources and the formation of the area studies methodology
