Course objectives
The goal of the diploma seminar is to provide students with information necessary for writing their diploma thesis, to help them with the choice of a topic, with searching for literature, and designing structure of the diploma thesis. The diploma thesis addresses a scholarly issue at a level appropriate to the Bachelor's degree.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
- work independently in accordance with academic standards;
- choose the topic of the diploma thesis;
- search and compare the relevant primary and secondary sources; - define the objective(s) of the thesis;
- identify a suitable method or methods for achieving objectives of the proposed master's thesis;
- propose the thesis table of contents;
- present, in a clear and comprehensive manner, partial results of her/his research at a joint diploma seminar;
- respond appropriately to the comments of seminar participants
Syllabus
  • The course consists of individual consultations with the thesis supervisor, depending on the specific demands of the degree program and thesis´ topic, and participation at the Thesis Seminar of the Department of Classical Studies.
  • The seminar is organized as follows:
  • - choice of the topic of the diploma thesis;
  • - formal requirements for the diploma thesis;
  • - creation of bibliographic citations, references, issues of plagiarism;
  • - search in library catalogs and electronic information resource databases;
  • - presentation of the thesis structure and bibliography.

Teaching methods
Lectures and discussions in the Thesis Seminar. Individual advisor-student tutorial in the choice of topic and approach to it. Presentation of the structure of the diploma thesis and bibliography in the Thesis Seminar.
Assessment methods
The advisor awards the course-unit credit for the semester on the basis of the active class attendance, individual student's work during the semester, and the presentation in the Thesis Seminar.
