Course objectives
The main goal of this class is to create and/or deepen the knowledge in following fields: • attributes of science and technology branches (terminology) • development of science and technology within human civilization (discoveries) • using scientific knowledge in actual life (inventions) • application of inventions in technological progress (manufacture) • science, machinery and technology in museology (documentation) • theoretical mastering in given lectures (general knowledge) • application of acquired findings on particular problems of museum labour After finishing this course the students will be able to: • explain the meaning of terms science and technology • understand the influence of these disciplines on civilization development • deduce mutual relations between diverse scientifical and technological branches on the basis of acquired knowledge • apply data from the sources and literature by field research of technological monuments • use acquired information in museum labour (documentation, deposition and restoration) • create the policy of collecting and demonstrating of the collection (exposition, exhibition, accompanying programmes) • make informed decisions in professional concentration of certain memory institutions
Syllabus
  • • science and technology in history – sorting, terminology, literature • prehistoric tribes – tools of timber, stone and natural materials, ceramics • antique civilizations – script, architecture, water management, birth of scientifical disciplines, discovery and gaining of metals, development of crafts • ancient cultures – progress in science and education, architecture, public buildings, utilization of wind and water power • barbarians and migration of peoples – military technique, development of agriculture, culture, science and education • the Middle Ages – time and space, monasteries and convents – centres of science and education, universities, medieval architecture, growth of crafts and trade, book printing • modern times – natural sciences, new scientifical disciplines and methods of production, technique and technology, workshops – beginnigs of factory production, customs and commercial policy • industrial revolution – progress in scientifical disciplines and military education, driving machines, factory production, natural resources, transportation, building materials, spheres of technique and technology • the present day – scientifical research and production, electricity – transfer of energy, driving power and information technology, contemporary technical possibilities • science and technology in museum – searching, collecting, storing, treating and displaying the objects
