- Course objectives
- The seminar provides a broad outline of the issues presented by musical dramaturgy in cinematic or theatrical works. Attention is also paid to the specifics of so-called video-game music. The aim is to offer an understanding of the elementary principles of music and sound in general in a referential types of multimedia work. The course includes practical exercises, analyses of selected works by students in the seminar, and discussion.
- Learning outcomes (in Czech)
- Po absolvování semináře budou studenti schopni rozpoznat, pojmenovat a vysvětlit jednotlivé vazby mezi obrazem nebo hereckou akcí a hudbou, obecně mezi viděným a slyšeným. Získají tak analytický nástroj ke zkoumání multimediálních děl a současně pro ně bude snadné rozpoznat umělecké strategie použité při jejich tvorbě. Stanou se tak i poučenými diváky, kteří budou odolní vůči manipulativním technikám, jenž jsou běžné např. v komerční produkci nebo v reklamě.
- Syllabus
- 1. traditional instruments in scientific viewpoints of music; selected terms and issues in music aesthetics and music theory, selected terminology (for non-musicologists)
- 2. a basic characteristic of music as part of a super-ordinate whole, film and incidental music; functional, autonomous and absolute music, the terms “scene” and “music tied to scenic arts”, the quality and limitations of functional music.
- 3. the basic types of film and incidental music, musical dramaturgy, the term diegesis; categorization of film and incidental music, the terms “adapted” and “original music”, diegetic and non-diegetic music, working with the source of music, the term “musical dramaturgy”
- 4. ties between the image/plot/action and music; position of music vis-à-vis the image/plot/action, direct and indirect ties – musical image counterpoint, inner (free) and outer (tight) ties, musical accent and pointing
- 5. the tectonics of a work with a musical/sonic component; centrifugal and centripetal forces, re-runs, repetition and anticipations, leitmotifs, quotations and reminiscence, silence
- 6. noises as facts and stylized noises as music; the reality of multimedia work and noise/sound dramaturgy, basic types of noise according to relation to image/plot, stylization, contradiction between the seen and the heard
- 7. the specifics of game music; music/sound and the psychology of gaming, analogy with film music

- Assessment methods
- The analysis on the function of music or sound dramaturgy in a selected multimedia work, presented by the student during the seminar, is assessed. Presenting the analysis is a condition for successfully concluding the seminar. Depending on the number of registered students, the individual analysis will be presented in the seminar or as homework handed in to the homework vault of course.
