Course objectives
This course aims to define the content and goals of historical sciences with an emphasis on auxiliary historical sciences and archive science. It will summarize information on memory institutions in the Czech Republic and describe sources and the types of information which can be drawn from them. It will explain the difference between primary and secondary sources and examine the different approaches which they use. Students will learn about the main types of academic texts and the principles for working with them, including any ethical aspects.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
Explain the structure and institutional foundation of historical sciences;
Characterize the main memory institutions;
Describe the network of archives and libraries in CZ;
Find and assess primary and secondary sources;
Differentiate the main types of academic text and apply citation rules in academic texts;
Describe the methods and approaches used in historical sciences.
Syllabus
  • • Historical sciences, the standing of AHS and archive science within historical sciences;
  • • The organization of historical science with an emphasis on AHS and archive science (departments in the Czech Republic and the rest of the world);
  • • Memory institutions as sources of information (archives, museums, libraries, the National Heritage Institute);
  • • The archive network in CZ;
  • • Legislation and the basic concepts of Czech archive science;
  • • Libraries in CZ, catalogues, literature searches;
  • • Primary and secondary sources, sources and literature;
  • • Types and groups of sources, principles of criticism;
  • • Accessing sources (archive aids, source editions);
  • • Bibliographies, their types, the principles for creating a bibliographical record, citations;
  • • Types of academic texts, principles for working with sources, ethical aspects;
  • • Methodologies and approaches in historical sciences.
