The course is suitable for bachelors, masters and doctoral students across disciplines. No technical skills in artificial intelligence are required. Curiosity and interest are sufficient.

Course objectives
Artificial intelligence is a phenomenon that is significantly transforming contemporary society and understanding it is becoming essential for every individual, whether they encounter it in their professional life or in their personal life. The course "The AI revolution: artificial intelligence as an opportunity and a threat to society" aims to deepen the understanding of this transformation. The content of the course does not focus on the technical details of AI, but seeks to provide a broader context and awareness of the impact and potential impact of AI. Students will actively engage with a variety of AI tools, from ChatGPT and other language models to tools for generating visual or audio-visual output, and develop skills that are important for the effective and critical use of these tools.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to:
- understand key concepts and terminology related to AI;
- know and critically evaluate real-world applications of AI across the world of study, work and personal life, including their unintended consequences;
- understand the basic principles of technologies used to implement AI;
- practice using generative language models and selected AI-based applications;
- identify the ethical and legal implications and challenges associated with AI;
- students will be able to engage in discussions about the impact of AI on society, potential threats and the future of work;
- students will be able to look for opportunities to use AI for responsible innovation in their fields of study and work.

Syllabus
  • The course will be divided into 3 thematic blocks, consisting of a total of 10 lectures and one 6-hour final workshop. Block 1: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence Petr Škyřík, Michal Černý 3 lectures Block 2: Practical Applications of Artificial Intelligence Kateřina Švidrnochová 3 lectures Block 3: Artificial Intelligence and the Future Roman Sellner Novotný, Natálie Káčová 3 lectures The final lecture, which will conclude all 3 blocks into a comprehensive whole. Roman Novotný, Kateřina Švidrnochová, Petr Škyřík In each block, students will meet invited guests from practice who will explore the discussed topic in more depth. The lectures will be delivered in a hybrid format, but we prefer attendance. Dates and location of lectures: Wednesday 18:00 - 19:30, Room C11, KISK, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University Organizational information and links to join will be sent at the beginning of the semester to registered students. The final meeting will take place physically at KISK, Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University, Saturday 16. 12. 2023 09:00 - 16:00. Students will be able to choose from 4 topics to work on under the guidance of a tutor. There will be 4 parallel workshops for groups of about 25 students. Students will be able to apply for the workshop topics one month before the workshop date.
Assessment methods
The final evaluation consists of:
- final test (min. 60 %);
- active participation (learners actively participate in discussions with the speakers);
- Participation in the final workshop (Saturday, December 16, 2023, 09:00 - 16:00);
- short assignments (students will submit 3 assignments, thematically related to the study blocks).
