- Course objectives
- The course introduces students into basic theoretical terminology of ethnology. Students learn about the position of ethnology in the structure of social sciences and lead them to the practical application of acquired knowledge.
- Learning outcomes
- After passing of this subject students will be able to describe a content and trends of ethnology and a change of its discourse at 20th century.
- Syllabus
- 1. Ethnology and its position in the scientific system of social and humanistic studies, evolution of the discipline in the Czech and international contexts.
- 2. Historical relations of the discipline and related disciplines names (ethnography, ethnology, folkloristics, social and cultural anthropology).
- 3. Methodology, problem of ethnographic error, ethnocentrism, cultural relativism, ethics.
- 4. Ethnic studies (character, evolution, terminology – nation, nationality, people, ethnic group, ethnicity, nationalism, xenophobia, racism, affirmative action).
- 5. Culture (definitions of culture and their branching toward ethnology and cultural anthropology, subculture and counterculture, culture apparent and hidden, mass culture, cultural studies).
- 6. Language (linguistic anthropology, idiolect, dialect, multilingualism, diglossia, standard and non-standard language).
- 7. Traditional culture, traditions.
- 8. Research of urban areas, urban ethnology.
- 9. Applied anthropology, ethnology and contemporary geopolitical issues (conflicts, globalisation, stereotypes).
