Course objectives
The lecture is designed to give students a basic overview of the development of modern Ukrainian history from 1914 to the establishment and first years of independent Ukraine. The lecture should not be an exhaustive factual description of historical events, but rather an approach and explanation of the basic landmarks and turning points of Ukrainian history and their insertion into the broader context of the political and social history of Central and Eastern Europe and the USSR in the 20th century. In a basic way important for explaining some important aspects of Ukrainian history that have their roots in the earlier past, some events of earlier date are briefly discussed.
