Course objectives
The aim of this course is to systematically deepen students' language skills in an entertaining way using the audiovisual material of the Chinese situation comedy Jia you er-nü (家有儿女). By analyzing the relevant passages of each episode, students will gain a realistic insight into the practical use of grammar and vocabulary used in everyday situations. Teacher will also point out to numerous cultural and historical contexts that occur in the series. In addition, further active language excercise will be implemented through group rehearsal and subsequent imitation of selected scenes from individual episodes. Thanks to this method, the course participants will excercise speaking and imitation of prosodically authentic Chinese pronunciation, typical Chinese gesticulation and many other communication skills.
Learning outcomes
By participating in the course, students acquire the ability to:
- record more information while listening to the spoken word
- better use the grammar of contemporary colloquial Chinese
- place a variety of cultural and historical references in context
- better navigate within the unfamiliar texts
- actively use a range of translation and interpretation methods and techniques
Syllabus
  • Content of the teaching session:
  • 1) audiovisual part: watching the episode and translating the individual sentences
  • 2) discussion part: analysis of selected grammatical phenomena and vocabulary, introduction and explanation of cultural and historical context
  • 3) rehearsal part: rehearsal of short scenes in groups and their subsequent staging

Attestation:
- credit assesment for Mgr. students consists of two parts:
1) submitting a translation (Czech/Slovak subtitles) of a selected episode of the series (after elimination of possible errors and shortcomings)
2) presentation, during which students present an analysis of the historical and cultural references contained in the episode they have translated
