Course objectives
Main phenomena of the development of Greek literature from Byzantine literature up to the beginnings of the 20th century (with emphasis on 19th century) will be dealt with. Lectures will be supplemented by readings of both primary and scholarly literature and students’ presentations on significant authors, phenomena and genres of the period. The aims of the course are to understand the main phenomena of the development of Modern Greek literature of the 19th century; ability to understand main tendencies of literary development, ability to classify authors and literary works into literary context and characterise them.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the seminar students are able:
understand the main phenomena of the development of Modern Greek literature of the 19th century;
to characterize the main trends of the development of Modern Greek literature of the 19th century in the world literary context;
to define the main genres and subgenres;
to characterize the works of the main authors in the literary context;
to translate and analyse texts of the required reading;
characterize the translation activity in relation to Greek literature.

  • Romanticism, the influence of folk songs and Cretan literature - Dionysios Solomos, the Heptanese School;
  • Romanticism and language purism – Athenian romantic school, historical novel;
  • Language question at the end of the 19th century - G. Psycharis;
  • The generation of 1880, interest in folk literature, victory of Dimotiki in poetry;
  • Kostis Palamas as the main author of the generation of 1880;

Teaching methods
The first part of the course consist of lectures, the second part is devoted to students’ presentations and readings of chosen literary works. During the semester, students prepare a presentation on a given topic. Students prepare chosen readings in advance, they use the Anthology of Greek Literature: 19th century (https://digilib.phil.muni.cz/handle/11222.digilib/131514).
Assessment methods
For successful completion of the course, it is necessary to prepare the texts submitted by a teacher on a regular basis, have the knowledge of the relevant topics and prescribed reading and to deliver a paper in class. At the end of the course, there is an oral examination testing students´ knowledge of the relevant topics and their ability to interpret and translate a text chosen from the prescribed reading.
