Course objectives
The aim of the course is to show the development of Russian from diachrony point of view and to explain main changes during the development of Russian on base of phonetical and grammar phenomena of old Russian and modern Russian confrontation.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to define and to describe rules of historical changes in phonetic and grammar system of Russian;
- to explain these phonetical and grammar phenomena in modern Russian that is not possible to explain only with facts of contemporary Russian;
- to explain the etymology of singular words in Russian;
- to clarify principles and reasons of distinctions in Russian and Czech formation as a consequence of differences in their historical development.
Syllabus
  • 1. Problems of the Russian history periodization. Key characteristic features of East Slavic branch. Old Russian written heritage as a source of Old Russian language study.
  • 2. Historical phonology. Loss of yers. Development of hard/soft correlation. Phonemes I, Y. Depalatalization processes. Origins of akanye and ikanye.
  • 3. Historical morphology. Substantives. Old Russian substantives declension paradigms. Formation of contemporary system of Russian declension.
  • 4. Adjectives. Differences in using short and long adjectives in Old Russian. Formation comparative forms. Possessive adjectives. Unification of plural forms. Changes of adjectives in the development of Russian.
  • 5. Pronouns in Old Russian: personal, reflexive, demonstrative, possessive, definite, interrogative, relative, indefinite, negative. Formation of contemporary system of Russian pronouns.
  • 6. The development of numerals as a word class. Etymology of basic numerals.
  • 7. Thematic and athematic verbs. Present, past and future tense forms. Tense-aspect relations. Formation of the imperative and conditional mood. The development of transgressives and verbal adjectives.
  • 8. Adverb. Etymology of the most common adverbs in modern Russian. Prepositions. Particles. Kinds of particles and their etymology. Conjunctions: coordinating and subordinating. Functioning of Old Russian conjunctions. Origins of interjections and their development.
  • 9. Historical syntax. Kinds of sentences typical for modern Russian and their development. Ways of expression deagentization. Modality of a sentence. Parts of sentence. Desemanticization of direct cases, their replacement with objective cases. Transgressive and participial constructions. Absolute Dative Case. Kinds of Sentences in Old Russian.
  • 10. Imprints of different developmental phases of Russian language (residues of dual, old declinational types etc.).
  • 11. Historical development of Russian vocabulary. Home vocabulary and loanwords. Church Slavic elements in modern Russian.
  • 12. The history and the development of Russian language. Views on Russian language origins. Standard language of Russian Nationality period; so-called second South Slavonic influence. Formation of new Russian standard language.

Teaching methods
Classes are held in the form of lectures. During the semester, students also perform practical tasks to master the material. Students should study part of the material on their own with the help of educational literature.
Assessment methods
The one-semester discipline is completed by an oral exam. The exam will include practical tasks from the material covered and shorter theoretical questions.
