- Course objectives
- The main aim of the course is to offer a general overview on the evolution of the Spanish language since the beginning of the medieval Castilian till modern Spanish. Once finished the course, the student will be able to identify and interpret the internal characteristics of the evolution of the Spanish language (historical grammar) in their external context, mainly social-historical. In first place, attention will be paid to basic characteristics of Latin in Hispania and external historical factors factors that shaped primitive Castilian Romance will be commented as well. The main content of the course will consist of study of internal patterns of evolution of Spanish on phonetic-phonological, morphosyntactic and lexical-semantic levels. All phenomena that will be studied will be demonstrated on fragments of texts from their specific periods.
- Learning outcomes
- Students learn basic patterns that have taken place in the internal history of the Spanish language (phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical-semantic changes).
They will learn the values of graphemes in the history of Spanish and how to read them and understand them. - Syllabus

- Teaching methods
- Lectures, obligatory reading tasks, class discussion, working in groups on old Castilian and Spanish texts.
Attention will be paid to class activities (comentaries and analysis of texts), although previous readings at home for each topic will be necessary too. - Assessment methods
- Written test that will consist of five questions on subjects included in syllabus and a short analysis of several word units. The final grade will depend on the level of homeworks.
