Cíle předmětu
This course will focus on Finnish fantasy literature with special reference to the so-called suomikumma, a specific branch of the New Weird that crystallized in the Finnish literary context at the beginning of the 21st century. The content of the course will be: 1) a contextualization of suomikumma (its continuity with earlier trends in Finnish fantasy and in the literary "mainstream" and its interconnection with foreign production; the aesthetic background of the work; the reception/reflection and the process of canonization of selected authors), 2) an introduction to key authors classified in this stream, their literary specificities and works (in published English translation), and 3) a discussion of the texts.
Výstupy z učení
The students will be able to recognize and describe this distinctive and dynamic kind of literature, which is not given enough space in standard literary history lectures, foster their ability to read and analyze English-language primary and secondary literature, as well as to discuss and write about it in English, and deepen their knowledge of less-known smaller European literatures
