Course objectives
The ability to summarise a text on the basis of listening and reading, written expression through creating various texts with application of stylistic techniques. Emphasis is placed on the student’s ability to compare the acquired vocabulary with the lexicon of their own language. Making Czech vocabulary instinctive (C1 level in CEFR) and developing and improving it in spoken and written expression to C2 level in CEFR. Dealing with specific communication situations through the use of the acquired language competencies (C2 level in CEFR).
Learning outcomes
After completing the subject students will be able to:
- actively express themselves orally and in writing about given subjects using advanced lexical apparatus (C2 in CEFR);
- analyse lexicon from a semantic and functional point of view, and will therefore be able to choose appropriate lexicon in their own spoken or written expression;
- write and logically arrange a clear and fluent text in an appropriate style, manage to write a grammatically and lexically correct review of a technical text or literary work;
- understand and explain the function of phraseology and idioms in various types of texts and compare them with the lexical apparatus of their own language;
- achieve readiness and assurance in expression comparable to a native speaker.
Syllabus
  • The subject follows on from CJCC06. In the lessons the competencies acquired in CJCC05 and CJCC06 will be revised and expanded.
  • 1. Work in the seminar is based on complete specialised texts and fiction. Emphasis will be placed not only on the lexical side, but as in CJCC06 also on the stylistic stratification of standard Czech and the structure of non-standard Czech (fiction) and terminology (specialist texts).
  • 2. Phraseology: a/ in the seminar the knowledge acquired in CJCC06 will be deepened b/ and additionally classwork will be expanded to include: - sayings – idiomatic expressions with animal names - idiomatic expressions with the names of body parts – idiomatic expressions expressing attention – replies, set phrases with non-principal verbs.
  • 3. Czech idioms.
  • 4. During the semester the student writes and submits 10 compositions on topics assigned by the teacher.

Teaching methods
Explanation of the theory in the seminar will be supplemented by practical exercises. Work with texts the student has read or listened to and writing compositions on given topics (10/semester) will form part of the study. The use of problem-solving methods and managed debate. Group and individual work. Interpretation of a Czech text (oral and written).
Assessment methods
To pass the subject it is necessary to successfully meet the requirements of the closing written test, submit 10 compositions and write a final composition using the given stylistic structure. It is also necessary to abide by the following regulations: 1/ Attendance of lessons includes completing work set by the teacher (homework, in-class presentations etc.) Failure to complete this work (student’s lack of preparation) is counted as an absence. 2/ Students are not allowed to change groups, apart from in exceptional cases with the prior written permission of the teacher.
