- Course objectives
- This Course focuses on the Knowledge of the religious, political and cultural History of Central-eastern, Eastern and South-eastern Europe from the beginning of the 16. to the beginning of the 18th. Century. On the Basis of a performance Analysis of Sources accompanied by a Commentary, Students will get acquainted with key Factors, which affected in a fundamental Way the Development of this Part of Europe. These include, for example:
the Emergency and Creation of the Russian Empire and its gradual Transformation into a European Superpower;
the gradual Degradation of the Polish-Lithuanian Monarchy;
serious Changes of the church and religious Backgrounds; the specific Form of Rivalry for Hegemony in Eastern Europe influenced often interests of ruling Dynasties.
A big Focus will be the Knowledge of the Differences between Eastern and Western Europe and on the Awareness of the common Features and Values to the Christian Basis of true Europe. - Learning outcomes
- At the end of this course, students : - will be able to understand the development of the Eastern Europe in the period of the early modern age - will be competent to describe the circumstances of the formation and development of the despotic regime in the Russia and the successive decline of the Polish-Lithuanian union which was created on the principle of the medieval aristocratic liberties - will be well versed in the development of the period political thinking - will be able to explain the development of the religious and ecclesiastic circumstances - will be able to analyze the specifics of the development of the Eastern Europe in the early modern age and also in subsequent period.
