Course objectives
User research is an integral part of information service design. In this course, we will walk through the entire design process together and discuss when and for what situations different qualitative and quantitative research methods are appropriate. We won't learn how to work with all of them. We will look in detail at in-depth interviews combined with user testing and complementary methods such as cardorting, shadowing, observation, emotional mapping, etc. From the researchers' point of view, an important moment is not only the preparation and execution of the research itself, but also the processing and evaluation of the collected data (with and without AI assistance), communicating these outputs to the whole team and helping to prioritize themes and design challenges that we move to the ideal phase. Researchers are an essential part of the other processes. Democratizing research, increasing design maturity, introducing research ops competencies, facilitating and moderating workshops. We can address some of these topics in the final sessions, depending on your interest. 📌 Classes begin the second week of the semester, for a total of 12 online sessions on MS Teams.
Syllabus
  • Introduction to user research. Introduction of methods that can be used in the design process. From inquiry to assignment. Creating a research brief. Stakeholder interviews. First mapping workshops. Identification of target groups. Creating personas. First research questions. Research plan. Research "deliverables". How to ask the right questions. Methods of conducting interviews. Methods of communicating with the respondent during user testing. Creating scenarios for in-depth interviewing and testing. Pilot tests. Recruitment. Who we want to talk to. How to find these people, how to reach them, how to communicate with them? GDPR. Administration. Rewards. The research day. Working with data, evaluation. From insights to insights. Involving AI in the process. Presentation of results. Engaging the team. Storytelling. Participatory design. Design challenges. Prioritization. Facilitating and moderating research workshops. Topics of your choice.
