The course is intended for doctoral students of the specialisation Historical languages of the Czech Lands in the programmes of Czech philology and Latin mediaevistics.

Course objectives
In the course, the most topical aspects of the historical development of German language and its predessors from the Proto-Indo-European to Early New High German are thematised.
Learning outcomes
Upon completing the course, the students will be able to: distinguish the epochs of German including its predessors; characterise the typical language features of each period as well as the changes therof; understand the changing functions of German in the society during the Middle Ages as well as their reflection in the written sources; outline the development of German and its status in the Bohemian Lands in the past;
Syllabus
  • An overview of the earlier development of German in the context of Indo-European and Germanic languages
  • Basic features and changes in spelling, morphology, lexicon, and syntax; older German language epochs: Old High German, Middle High German, Early New High German;
  • German on the territory of Bohemian lands - characteristic features, important types of sources
  • Functions and areas of use in the context of other languages in the Bohemian lands
