- Course objectives
- The aim of the course is to practice the techniques of working with (nonfictional) texts in German and the practice of argumentative writing in response to these texts. In the first step, the seminar focuses on a detailed understanding of the linguistic and textual structures of the text (semantic fields, syntactic links, cohesion, based on Siegel: Sprache, Stil, Struktur, and Brandi: Lesekurs für Geisteswissenschaftler). This is followed by the practice of writing argumentative texts. Their theses and topics are also text-based (according to Brandi: Lesekurs für Geisteswissenschaftler). The productive phase of the course complements the vocabulary work used for argumentation, paraphrases, formulation of attitudes, etc., often used in the professional style (Graefen / Moll).
The course provides basic techniques for argumentative writing, which in the curricula of the German Department is the starting point for writing bachelor's diploma theses. - Learning outcomes
- After completing the course the student will be able to:
- to not get lost in shorter (non-fictional) texts (speeches, lectures, essays, scholarly articles, etc.)
- working with these texts from a linguistic point of view (paraphrases, changes in sentence structures, variation of inquit-verbs, etc.)
- summarizing and excerpting basic non-fiction,
- write short, argumentative texts with a distinct thesis and argument structure,
- to conduct literature searches on topics from German Studies. - Syllabus
- 1. Content analysis of texts (questions, identification of information in the text). 2. Language work with texts (receptive: reflection of structures, productive: variations and design of structures). 3. Vocabulary for summaries, excerpts and creation of own argumentative texts. 4. Formulation of theses, construction of argumentative texts. 5. Literature searches, work with resources.
