- Course objectives
- The goal of the course is to present the history of the spread of Christianity in Vietnam and Korea in the context of the early missions in China and East Asia.
- Learning outcomes
- By the end of the course, the student should know the history of the Christian missions in East Asia, understand the contact of the different cultures and will be prepared for further study in more specialised courses.
- Syllabus
- 1. Christianity as a missionary religion, the problem of inculturation. 2. The missionary activity of the Catholic church in Asia in the 16th-18th century, major personalities and institutions, political and religious context. 3. An overview of the religious traditions of Vietnam and Korea. 4. Alexandre De Rhodes and the beginnings of Christianity in Vietnam. 5. Christianity in Vietnam from De Rhodes' departure to the era of Pierre Pigneau de Béhaine. 6. Christianity in Korea from the first contact to legalization. 7. Christianity in 19th century Vietnam. 8. Korean Christianity in the era of the Korean Empire and the Japanese rule. 9. Christianity in 20th century Vietnam. 10. Christianity in Korea from 1945 to the present era. New religious movements in Korea. 11. Bible translations into Korean and Vietnamese and the relative issues.
