Course objectives
Upon completing the course students will have increased their awareness of socio-cultural aspects of translation, methodological contexts for studying translations and will have had practical experience in translational activites. They will have enhanced their capacity to make reasoned translation decisions and become more aware of their strengths and weaknesses in translation.
Syllabus
  • (1) Translation Studies as a discipline. Approaches within translation studies. TS literature.
    (2) Translation of literature for children and young adults. Specifics of children's literature and its translation, children's literature as suitable material for the study of translation. Plagiarism in translation - analysis.
    (3) Technical translation. Translation and terminology.
    (4) Essay translation.
    (5)Translation skills development.

Teaching methods
Home readings, translation assignments to be completed at home, class discussion, online discussion, comparison of different published translations of texts, peer feedback.
Assessment methods
A. Final translation - sit-in exam (a journalistic text). B. Final translation - take-home exam (a technical text).
